Step-Down and Step-Up Transformer

Lesson

CHAIN GEARS

In this tutorial we will look at step-down and step-up transformers. The voltage applied to the input of the transformer is called the primary (input), and what is received at the output is called the secondary (output), and the corresponding windings are called the primary and secondary.

When voltage is applied to the primary winding, an alternating magnetic flux is created in the surrounding magnetic environment. Changes in this magnetic flux induce voltage in the primary and secondary windings. If the windings of the secondary winding are more than the windings of the primary, then the transformer is step-up and vice versa – if they are less it is step-down.
